Street Cars

It's been decades since a light-rail trolly has cruised down Birmingham streets.

But under a 33-million dollar proposal about 1-mile of Birmingham between Morris Avenue and Lynn Park could see street cars at work once again.

BJCTA Chairman David Hill says he understands some people want a more expansive route, but says you have to start somewhere. "It's a solid plan, simply because what we want to do is doable. Laying cement, putting tracks down. Having a route is doable."

Carrie Wyatt has fond memories of the old trolly system, even though she was required to stand while white passengers were allowed to sit. "They were beautiful. They were cheap. I'm trying to think. Did I pay 15-cents or 25?"

Wyatt says that because street cars were so cheap to ride they were always packed with passengers trying to get back and forth across town. And it's a system she says she misses. "I do! Because they were so cheap. I think we need them cause with the gas we can't afford the gas now."

But not everyone thinks trolleys are the best option for Birmingham's transit problem. Southside Businesses President James Little believes buses are the best bet. "If the transit authority says they're going to be buying more buses and the frequency of the buses is going to be more frequent than before.. And bus service more reliable.. That would be a lot better for us."

Even though this is a short time table, only about 18 months, that doesn't mean the plan that's been presented is set in stone. The BJCTA says they will take feedback on the way the route will be laid out.

To help save money the BJCTA is considering purchasing 10 vintage street cars from Italy at a cost 25 to 35-thousand dollars each.
