Have you ever played dominoes on Sunday? Or, flicked a booger into the wind? If so, you've broken the law here in Alabama. Those are just two of the numerous bizarre, random, and downright silly laws in our state.
Most people would agree laws are necessary to maintain order in society to help keep things running safely and smoothly. But, we've found some laws that leave you scratching your head wondering why in the world these rules are in the books.
For instance, do we really need a law that makes it illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while operating a vehicle? Well, it's the law. You'd think this would be relatively obvious.
Another law in Alabama pertaining to driving has to do with wearing something on your feet. Did you know, it's illegal to drive barefooted? But, boy does it feel good to have some air flowing between the toes on a hot summer day.
Here's another Alabama law that sounds a little overboard. Believe it or not, putting salt on a railroad track may be punishable by death. According to the Alabama Department of Archives and History, the fear was salt would attract cattle to gather on the tracks, which could cause a train wreck.
"It appears under modern situations of being absurd, humorous, and downright foolish, but it wasn't at one time, it was very valid," said Chris Doss, an attorney and legal historian.
Some of our laws are just plain silly. For instance, it is illegal to wear a fake mustache if it causes laughter in a church.
Another crazy law involves, of all things, an ice cream cone. Did you know you can't have one in your back pocket at any time? As much of an urge that you may have to put an ice cream cone back here for safe keeping, we highly recommend against it.
It should be noted that Stephen Hauck, the reporter on this story, was neither arrested nor put to death during the reporting of this story.
