Push to modernize parking meters in downtown Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- - There is a new push in Birmingham to modernize parking meters.

At Wednesday's transportation committee meeting, two cashless parking companies presented their technology for parking to be paid by phone or app.

That means instead of paying at a meter, you would do everything by phone.

Councilor Darrell O’Quinn says citizens complain about parking issues all the time and he thinks this is the best way to move the city forward.

“We can do things better, today is the kick off of a conversation about getting us there,” O’Quinn said. “Not too many people carry around sacks of quarters these days."

"I’m not tech savvy, therefore I am OK with the quarters, dimes and nickels," resident Daphne Davis weighed in. "But then you have others who would just want to whip their phones out like they are doing already."

Right now it is unclear how the new technology will impact the 9 parking attendants who work for the city.

There is no timetable for when the idea will be considered by the city council.
