BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- UPDATE: Rocky Ridge fire says fires were spread along 6 miles of interstate from mile marker 17-23. Most all of them are out now.
According to Capt. Harrell with Birmingham Fire Department, the brakes of an 18-wheeler sparked the brush fires.
The CBS42 Real Time Traffic tracker says speeds are slowed from 5-10 mph on either side of the interstate, and drivers should expect severe delays up to 30 minutes.

ORIGINAL: Multiple grass fires in the median of I-459 are reportedly causing major traffic delays on both sides of the interstate.
According to the CBS42 Real Time Traffic tracker, speeds both east and westbound on I-459 are currently around 15 mph. According to Birmingham Fire, smoke is obscuring visibility.
Please exercise extreme caution and take a detour if at all possible.
